The Untold Secret of Steve Jobs' Empire (Part 1 of 2)

The late Steve Jobs built a technology empire that has revolutionized much of the world ... and I believe it will continue to do so.

You might not ever sweep the globe with your products and services the way he has done, but by using this incredible secret, you can make yourself a small fortune.

To really understand the magic behind Mr. Jobs, let me lay the groundwork for you with this true story about A.T. Stewart, father of the modern department store, as told by Russell Conwell in his famous speech, Acres of Diamonds. Listen carefully and you will discover the magic to building an empire ...

"A.T. Stewart, a poor boy in New York, had $1.50 to begin life on. He lost 87½ cents of that on the very first venture. How fortunate is that young man who loses the first time he gambles. That boy said, 'I will never gamble again in business,' and he never did.

How did he come to lose 87½ cents?

You probably all know the story of how he lost it - because he bought some needles, threads, and buttons to sell which people did not want, and had them left on his hands, a dead loss.

Said the boy, 'I will not lose any more money in that way.' Then, he went around first to the doors and asked the people what they did want. Then, when he had found out what they wanted, he invested his 62½ cents to supply a known demand. Study it wherever you choose - in business, in your profession, in your housekeeping, whatever your life, that one thing is the secret of success. You must first know the demand. You must first know what people need, and then invest yourself where you are most needed.

A.T. Stewart went on that principle until he was worth what amounted afterward to 40 millions of dollars, owning the very store in which Mr. Wanamaker carries on his great work in New York. His fortune was made by his losing something, which taught him the great lesson that he must only invest himself or his money in something that people need. When will you salesmen learn it? When will you manufacturers learn that you must know the changing needs of humanity if you would succeed in life?"

Knowing the current and ever-changing demand is vital ... but it is not the whole equation.

There are two more things you need to apply in business to really create success ...

To illustrate this, let me tell you one other story, this one about Steve Jobs and the iPhone. This story is pulled from a New York Times article titled, "How the U.S. Lost Out on iPhone Work" ...

"In 2007, a little over a month before the iPhone was scheduled to appear in stores, Mr. Jobs beckoned a handful of lieutenants into an office. For weeks, he had been carrying a prototype of the device in his pocket.

Mr. Jobs angrily held up his iPhone, angling it so everyone could see the dozens of tiny scratches marring its plastic screen, according to someone who attended the meeting.

He then pulled his keys from his jeans.

'People will carry this phone in their pocket,' he said. 'People also carry their keys in their pocket. I won't sell a product that gets scratched,' he said tensely. The only solution was using unscratchable glass instead. 'I want a glass screen, and I want it perfect in six weeks.'"

Between these two short stories, there is a remarkable secret formula to creating massive amounts of wealth. It is very simple ... yet it is usually the number one thing that up-and-coming business owners neglect.

And, let me tell you, the secret formula being used here has never been more needed than it is today with online business development. Steve Jobs mastered it and created the largest company in the world, while changing the way we consume music, documents, videos, the Internet, and social media.

So, let me break all this down into a simple 3-step formula for you so that you can begin replicating it in your thinking, business life, and even in your personal life.

First: A Proven Demand.

Notice that I did not say "need." We all have needs, but that is not where new wealth is created. New, ongoing wealth is found in human demands. What are the products, services, ideas, and luxuries that we come to "demand"?

Human beings are funny critters. In most places in the world, we figured out a long time ago how to meet our basic needs. The fact is that you and I could live just fine by eating beans and rice every day. That meets our needs. So, why do we eat a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, meats, and dairy products? Because we want - no, we demand - variety. We demand the joy of sitting down to a rich, tasty meal on a regular basis. We demand fast foods and microwave ovens that save us time.

In a similar vein, we don't "need" cell phones, computers, or even cars for that matter. Humans lived and survived quite nicely without all of that stuff long before you and I came along. But, we came along and demanded more out of life. And, most of us are getting it thanks to some savvy business owners.

Don't look for needs - those are all taken care of. Look for the demand.

Second: Improve and Innovate.

I have a news flash for you. Steve Jobs did not invent the cell phone, PDA, computer, tablet, or any other device that I know of.

Just like Mark Zuckerburg of Facebook didn't invent social media. Ray Kroc of McDonald's didn't invent the hamburger. And, Sam Walton of Walmart didn't invent big-box retail stores.

You can't even tell me who invented those things without a quick Wikipedia search.

(Oh, and Jimmy Whales of Wikipedia didn't invent the online encyclopedia or the "wiki" format ... that was Rick Gates, in 1993 ... but I digress ... )

But, all of these people found a way to improve on products that were already proven to have a demand. They innovated new, unique, better, faster, easier, stronger, tastier, cheaper, and smarter ways to do things.

For Steve Jobs, part of the magic to the iPhone was getting rid of the standard plastic screen that scratched easily and replacing it with unscratchable glass. It's a small thing, but after 18 months of my iPhone running around in my pocket, the face still looks new. That makes me feel good ... like I'm a man of quality. I demand quality in my life and Mr. Jobs found a way to innovate and deliver.

Third: Marketing.

Even the best products and services that meet the highest demands in the world can fail ... and have repeatedly.

The final ingredient here is your ability to speak to buyers in a way that clearly tells your story and speaks to how it relates to them.

A personal experience from about 10 years ago sticks out in my mind ...

My wife and I were taking the children on a walk in the park. We saw another family sitting at the side of the pond with a loaf of bread. A flock of ducks had assembled close by the shore in hopes of picking up a mid-morning snack.

Now, note this ... the ducks were already fat and happy. They had plenty of food in the form of pond-scum and bugs. They did not need a slice of Wonder Bread to live. But, if you have ever eaten a bug, you know Wonder Bread is a lot more enjoyable. Even if you are a duck.

So, the demand was there ... and the fluffy white, innovate bread was there. The family was poised for a successful outing with the kiddies to feed the ducks.

But then, it happened ... One of the younger children suddenly grabbed a bunch of slices of bread with both hands and ran excitedly toward the pond, screaming as he went. As he got close to the water's edge, he hurled the chunks of bread at the now frightened and scattering ducks.

You know the result. The ducks scattered in an instant and the bread got soggy and sank to the bottom of the pond, much to the pleasure of the carp.

Moral of the story ... The way you present your message is vital to your success. If you look at some of HP's odd, complex, alien-style tablet ads and compare them to Apple's rich, warm, personal ads, you can quickly see why Apple is crushing them in this market.

Now that you know this simple, time-tested formula, the question is, how do you implement it?

How do you find products and services that are in demand? Because, as any good copywriter or marketer will tell you, that is the very first and most essential step to success. You MUST have a compelling offer. The offer has to be intrinsic in the product itself. It can't be something it isn't.

How do you uncover where there is a need for improvement and innovation? Because we, as humans, demand better and better lives, there is always a way to improve on existing goods and services.

How to Find a Mentor You Can Trust

In the next few minutes, I'm going to give you a solid, bulletproof formula for picking a mentor you can trust.

But first, why do you need a mentor?

I'm using the term "mentor" here pretty loosely. What I mean is a person or system you can comfortably hang your hat on. Someone reliable who will show you how and when and where you can make money online.

There are two reasons why you need this simple formula of mine...

First, there has never been a "solo success story" in the history of the world. Every person of great wealth, health, and happiness has had someone giving them a hand up and helping them find their way.

You're not going to be the first person in history to break this pattern, so you need a person or system to help you along your journey.

Second, there is the issue of white noise.

That is what I call the constant bombardment of information, pitches, and enticements you and I face every day.

It seems like everyone under the sun has some kind of system for making money online. And, all of them are fighting and grabbing for your attention. It's like walking into an old-fashioned marketplace with 37,000 vendors hoping to sell you their wares. They shout and yell and do everything they can to win you over. The volume can be deafening.

It's also very confusing.

Which one can really help you? Which is a scam? Which is well-meaning, but just doesn't have the right stuff for you?

You and I both know that before you move forward, you need to pick something or someone to work with. Until that happens, your mental capital will be spent wondering who you should trust... and you'll be caught up in wondering if some system is right for you.

To help you get past that stagnant position, I'm giving you my personal formula that I've used for picking mentors I trust and are right for me. Here it is...

1. Step One: Harmonize Values and Priorities

This is the first and probably most important step. You want to know if the mentor or system you're considering harmonizes with your core values.

It's no good saying, "I don't like what that guy is promoting, but he seems to be making a lot of money so I'll follow his lead." If you do that, it won't be long before you feel frustration, conflict, and internal turmoil.

All of those feelings will stop you dead in your tracks. You'll be confused and conflicted. You'll always be wondering if what you're doing is right or not. All of that energy will take away from your ability to make money online.

Many years ago, when I started my copywriting business, I sat down and made a list of industries, products, and services I would never write for. I also made a list of activities I would never engage in.

I applied that same list to my selection of gurus and mentors. If they made their money in those sectors or strongly supported those values on my list, I stayed clear.

As I looked at my list, I saw that someone was making a ton of money in all of these industries. I also knew that some mentors in those industries were decent people... just not my kind of people. I wanted to be true to myself - no make that... I had to be true to myself so I could sleep peacefully at night.

One other thing to consider here, that's closely related... Does the mentor or system harmonize with your priorities? In other words, is following this path right for you, based on your personal priorities, goals, and focus in life?

I could have made a great deal of money in the world of financial copywriting... but, frankly, it was just not my thing.

So, my first question for you is this... does the mentor or system harmonize with your personal, internal, core values and priorities? If yes, move on to Step Two...

2. Step Two: Determine Congruency and Sincerity

I wish it wasn't so, but there are people in our world today that say one thing... and do another. Or, they encourage you to do something they have never done. They sell theory, not reality.

At one point, when I was in a critical phase of my life and business development, I found myself sitting across the desk from Michael Masterson. It was a rare and profitable treat for me.

We were talking about a number of opportunities I could pursue. One of them was wide-open and growing. It was a good opportunity in a good industry. He said to me, "Joshua, have you ever done anything in this industry?"

"Well, no," I replied.

"Then I think we'd better stay away from it right now. People can feel when you are sincere and are speaking from experience. You don't want to try and sell theory or guesswork. People deserve better than that."

It had a profound impact on me. I decided that in all of my efforts, I needed to walk the walk, not just talk the talk. This meant I could not get rich by selling systems and ideas that I had not personally implemented.

When you look at a mentor or system, ask yourself, "Have they actually done what they are proposing I do? Is their life congruent with their teachings?" If not, stay away. You are buying theory, not reality.

And, if you're going to put your time and money into building a business online, you deserve to know what really works and is proven.

3. Step Three: Reality Check

A lot of mentors and gurus out there get a little carried away in their claims and promises.

I understand why... it's very hard to be heard in the fierce marketplace today. And, for a certain crowd in the world - hype sells. The more hype... the more inflated the promises... the more they're buying.

So, in order to sell more and make a living, many mentors play the "Keep up with the Hypesters" game. If one promises you can make $5,000 a week working just 20 hours, then the next guy feels like he needs to promise you $10,000 a week in just 10 hours to even be heard. And, it can sharply escalate from there... as we have both seen.

But, here's my perspective... I love vegetable gardening. I love the process of preparing the soil, planting the seeds, weeding, giving the plants time to grow, and then finally reaping a healthy, fulfilling harvest.

There are certain laws in play here that just can't be skipped or rushed. You have to do things right, in the right order, and in the right timing.

If you plant seeds on Monday and try to harvest a week later, you'll get nothing but dirt.

Business is the same way.

There is an order, process, and timing to it all that needs to be obeyed.

So ask yourself, "Is this system or mentor promoting things in a realistic, rational order, with appropriate timing?" If not, stay away. Save your time and money.

Over the years, I have used this simple, three-step formula to protect my time, my money, and my emotions. More than anything, it has been very effective for me at turning down the volume of the "noise" that fills my life. This has made me much more focused and effective... resulting in a healthier, happier, wealthier, more fulfilling life.

This simple formula has also helped me build a great team of mentors - people that genuinely care about me, my happiness, and my financial success.

If you are serious about making money online and creating cash-flow systems, then clearing the noise and locking in a mentor is the first and most essential step. If you get this wrong, you could wander for years and spend money recklessly on things that never produce.

I know that cutting the noise and gaining a solid mentor has made all the difference for me.

In a word... WOW.

Last week, I asked you to share your thoughts, questions, concerns, and dreams with me.

The response was almost overwhelming. I have been reading thousands of comments, stories, insights, and personal feelings.

Thank you!

I feel like I know you now. I'm going to do my very best to honor the trust you have placed in me by being so open and direct.

Today, I thought it would be very helpful for me to summarize a number of the things that came up repeatedly in the responses.

After I share those main points with you, I'm going to give you five specific resources that will show you exactly how to start making money online.

(You'll notice there is a strong correlation between your questions, thoughts, and comments... and the insights I'm going to share with you over the next few weeks.)

I found five major themes repeated time and time again as I analyzed and evaluated the survey results. Here they are... see if you relate to them...

1. Big Question #1... Who do I listen to? Who can I trust?

This is a HUGE issue.

Specifically, you told me: "I want to get focused and start moving forward, but there are so many options, so many systems, so many tricks, so many secrets, so many voices. Which one do I listen to? And should I be listening to all of them? I mean, they all sound really important!"

I sure can relate to this. When I first got started building my business, I went newsletter crazy. I think at one time I was subscribed to 30-40 newsletters. I had purchased about half that many marketing, copywriting, and business development programs. And, I had attended twice that many live seminars.

If they were talking, I was buying and listening and trying.

After a while, my head started to feel like it was going to pop. Massive information and sensory overload.

What's more, I felt like a failure because I couldn't make ANY of those programs work. So, my frustration levels rose and my income dropped. It was not good.

One of the biggest decisions I had to make at that time was who I was going to listen to. I realized that many of those people were just con artists. They were selling systems for making money online that taught other people how to sell systems for making money online... and no one had actually made money online with a viable business.

Stay clear of those folks.

But, there were others that were sincere, genuine, and truly successful... I just couldn't listen to and follow all of them. I had to pick one to save my sanity.

So, how do you pick? How do you know which is right for you?

In the next few weeks, I'm going to give you a very clear, concise formula for choosing your "online business and money-making mentor"... I'm talking about the person and/or system you should follow and use to create your personal business and money-making system.

2. Big Question #2... How to pick a product or service that will actually sell.

I was speaking at a seminar a few months ago and a very nice, distinguished-looking gentleman in his mid-50s approached me with this same question...

"I've been in business and sales for over 30 years. I know a little about marketing and a few things about copywriting. I'm talented and intelligent. I just don't understand the Internet... and even worse, I have no idea what I would sell online."

The talented individual without a product or service to sell is very common.

How do you know what will sell? How do you know if the market is saturated? How do you pick the next, hot trend? How...

Obviously, if you could figure out the next Facebook, you'd be set for life. I'm just going to burst your bubble and say that you probably aren't going to.

But, I'll re-inflate that bubble by telling you that you don't need to create the next Facebook. You can make a couple hundred dollars... to tens of thousands of dollars... online with just a small handful of people on planet Earth ever even knowing you exist.

I have met and coached people who have a ‘buyer list' of less than 5,000 people, but make a strong $500,000 a year. Think of that!

One of the keys to that formula is picking the right product and/or service.

That is going to be a major part of our conversation in the coming weeks as well. I'll show you a number of really simple, totally free, and low-tech ways of checking the pulse of the market. Give me any product or service idea and in about 10 minutes, I can tell you if it is going to sell or not.

I'll show you how to do the same.

3. Big Question #3... How to build a profitable online business without learning a bunch of techno-garbage.

I'm with you there!

Technology is the ultimate moving target. iPhones rule the world... and five years ago they didn't even exist. Facebook, Twitter, iPads, Google Docs, mobile marketing, texting, and hundreds of other technologies came into being just in the past 5-10 years.

It moves at lightning speed.

What will tomorrow bring? Scary to think about.

The question is this... do you have to keep up with the ever-increasing madness? Do you need to be a certified geek and devote your life to the worship of the latest and greatest gadgets?

No!

How would you feel if I told you that you don't need to be unusually technologically savvy to make money online. What's more, keeping up with the geeked-out Jones' is not a requirement.

And, actually, from a business management and money-making perspective, you may be better off keeping your hands off the iPad, and staying out of the HTML coding. You'll see why as we move forward.

4. Big Question #4... How to build a list of people who want to hear from you and will buy.

There was a day when people walked around and bragged about the size of their "list."

"I have 300,000 names on my list" they would say with a deep sense of belittling pride and superiority.

It used to impress me.

Not any more.

I started working with many of those companies. I saw how many of those people were actually listening to them. I saw how even fewer were actually buying... or had ever bought.

I don't know, maybe there was a time when that was the only way to have success online, but those days are gone.

Being genuine, building relationships, connecting with real people that are excited and eager to buy from you... that is the key to online business today. Especially if you are not looking to get rich, but just want to make an extra $1,000 to $10,000 a month with a side business.

If people really want to hear from you, they will usually buy... especially if you are connected with them and know what is going to benefit them.

5. Big Question #5 (the nitty gritty!) ... You want to know if you can get started with little or no money...

This is a tough one. And, I'm compelled to be straight with you...

Nothing in life comes for free. I don't care what anyone tells you. There is a price to everything.

But, one of the marvelous things about the Internet is that it has radically changed our medium of exchange.

It used to be that money was just about the only medium of exchange. If you wanted something, you had to cough up cold, hard cash.

Today, the Internet makes valuable exchanges so much easier that in many cases, money is not needed. For example, if you want to be heard on Facebook, you don't have to pay money... but you do have to pay in time and interesting posts.

I have found many, many resources for starting and running an online business that require a price other than hard cash.

So, is it possible to get up and running with little or no money? Yes - I believe it is.

But, let me be clear... There is a price to be paid. You will make some kind of exchange to get money flowing to you.

I'll give you the resources and insights needed to make the exchange quickly and reasonably... and usually without putting down cash.

Okay - that's all I have for you right now...

There were many other insights and questions that came up.

For example, "Can you give me a simple, rational, step-by-step system for making money online?" or "I've tried many systems that get me started, but leave me hanging at the halfway mark. Can you help me finish and actually start making money?"

I could go on, but I think the five I've commented on here were the biggies.

I want you to know that I've heard you loud and clear. I told you before that my mission right now is to help you build an online, side business that will bring in a solid income - eventually netting you over $100,000 a year.

I now know what your most pressing questions are... and I promise to answer every one of them.

First, you should know there is no way I can solve your cash-flow problems without your help. That makes sense, doesn't it? It should, but far too many systems for making money online never consider the most important factor... YOU.

So, the first thing I'm going to do is get your input. If I were consulting with one of my clients, I'd never dream of trying to boost their income without first discovering where they were at. I think you deserve the same attention and respect, don't you?

Step One is to open the lines of communication so I can give you the right information. We'll take care of that in just a minute. At the end of my note here, you'll find a link to a unique questionnaire that will be valuable to you.

But, before we go there, think about this for a minute with me...

The Internet has made it possible for you to make a strong, steady, consistent income of $100,000 (or more) from a side-business online, in your spare time. By now, you've seen, known, or read about enough people who are doing that very thing. There should be no doubt in your mind that it's possible.

But, if you're not doing it... if you're not living that lifestyle today... then there must be one of two things going on... A) You don't believe YOU can do it... or B) You are confident you can, you just don't have the right system yet.

In recent issues of The Carefree Entrepreneur, I've recommended you look seriously at starting an online-based import-export business.

First-time entrepreneurs and small-scale businesses do really well in this niche. It's a simple business model. You buy low (products manufactured overseas, usually in China) and sell at huge markups to customers in the U.S.

You can get started without much upfront investment. And, you don't need any experience in import-export or even any type of business.

It's possible due to easy-to-use online services, including one website that links business people like you with thousands of manufacturers. It's called Alibaba.com. And, all its members - 25 million and counting - are ready to do business. You can find manufacturer listings for everything from clothing to kids' toys to electronics. Pretty much every consumer product you can think of is covered.

With drop-shipping arrangements, you don't even have to worry about storing inventory. An order from your online storefront goes directly from the factory to your customer's front door.

Making Your First Deal

After researching all the top-selling products online per the steps in Marc's essay, I found several products that had good numbers: remote control helicopters, mp3 players, GPS navigation systems, and fleece jackets.

I picked fleece jackets - a perfect product for this time of year. (Tip: Keep seasonal trends in mind when picking a product to sell online.)

So, now I've picked my "hot" product. My next step is to go over to Alibaba.com to check out suppliers.

A quick search showed there were more than 16,000 listed. That means they are very competitive on price. They want to do business with you.

The wholesale price was between $5 and $20. Based on current prices here in the U.S., you could double or triple that when you sell them.

I chose a men's fleece jacket from Fuzhou Golden Sunshinetex Garment Co. Ltd., located in Fujian, China.

My next step is to contact the supplier via email (or a phone call) to get more information. In the case of Fuzhou Golden Sunshinetex Garment Co. Ltd., the contact is Susan Li. All the company information and contact info is provided on the Alibaba website, including website, phone number, email, and physical address.

There are no language barriers - English is the language of business. They are looking to do business with Westerners. That's why their main contact uses an English name.

Now you try it.

Pick a "hot" product using the steps in Marc Charles' essay. You'll be reviewing the bestselling products on sites like eBay, Amazon, and Google Product Search.
Then, check out the manufacturers on Alibaba.com. Get familiar with the wholesale prices they offer, the different features, and other details.

The next step is to negotiate with the supplier. Your goal is to get the lowest wholesale price so you can increase your profits when you sell the product online.

The Secret Qualities of Successful Information Products

If someone asked you, "What's the biggest chunk of the U.S. economy?" ... you probably wouldn't say "information."

But, expenditures on information and information products account for over half of this country's economy. That's roughly $5 TRILLION!

Why so much? Americans have an unquenchable thirst for information. We crave information to make us healthier ... wealthier ... more beautiful. But most of all, we want information so we can show others how much we know.

I've developed a highly-successful publishing business selling information that people want. You can, too.

The key is developing an information product that people not only want to buy but want to continue to buy (or renew). This isn't hard - if you understand the following 7 Qualities of Successful Information Product Development.

Quality #1: Is the Idea Interesting?

Interesting ideas connect with a genuine fundamental aspect of life. And, the first person they have to interest is you. If you pick ideas that interest you, research and writing will be fun. But, interest goes beyond that. Your idea has to be truly interesting to your reader.

For example, my first retail publishing idea in the early 1970s was for U.S. investors to invest globally. The idea was sound and remained very interesting for a long time.

On the other hand, look at collectables. There will always be a collectables market. Yet, many collectables are attractive only because they are in vogue.

If, for example, you had a publication about Beanie Babies back when they were in vogue, you could have done well. Today, that publication would fall on its face.

Fads offer attractive publishing opportunities, but they don't last. Publications about interesting topics survive.

Quality #2: Is the Idea Legal and Ethical?

I once got a letter about how I could mail First Class letters for only 3 cents! Indeed, the stamp on the envelope was 3 cents.

This seemed interesting, since I spend hundreds of thousands a year on postage. The letter promised that, for $12, I could get details on how to mail First Class letters for 3 cents.

This was too good to be true, but I was interested. A few days later, I got one photocopied page telling me how to do it. The page claimed that, as a business, the Post Office had made an offer to send my mail at the current rate. And it claimed that, as a businessman, I could counteroffer by putting a 3-cent stamp on my letters instead. If the Post Office accepted and mailed my letters, they accepted my offer. The idea was to simply mail all your letters with a 3-cent stamp, because most would get through. And, the idea was neither legal nor ethical.

The Postal Service's Revenue Protection Department operates by spot inspection, true enough. So, yes, many of these 3-cent letters would get through. But, anyone mailing lots of them could expect to be investigated by the U.S. government. So, in the long run, it wouldn't have been profitable. The fines (not to mention prison time) for these kinds of actions are very heavy.

Quality #3: Is the Idea Attractive?

Your idea has to attract first-time buyers. It doesn't have to be pretty or pleasant. But, it must attract.

Attractiveness appeals to emotions in some way. The emotions can be good, bad, or even ugly. For example, one ad that worked well read, "I'm mad as heck at the government for cheating us - here's how to get even." It's not a very pretty idea. But, it's certainly attractive.

A publication must hold your reader's interest to succeed in the long-term. But, attractiveness gets potential readers to drop everything, read a sales story, and buy your publication.

Quality #4: Is the Idea Usable?

Your idea has to fill some need for your reader. This is vital to gaining repeat customers for your publication. The idea has to work for its readers.

A publication can be entertaining. With a golf publication, for instance, the pleasure of reading about golf courses may be enough to make it useful if the main goal is to give the reader satisfaction through description.

On the other hand, the goal might be to help the reader know how to get lower golf scores (pride). Or, show times at various courses when greens fees are reduced (savings).

Quality #5: Is the Idea Understandable?

Some years ago, the book A Brief History of Time was a New York Times bestseller for over a year. It was called one of the most-purchased/least-read books of all time. The author's next books didn't sell well. His books - all of them about quantum science - were just too complicated.

Ask: Is my information understandable for my target market? As A Brief History of Time shows, being interesting can sell a book. But if it's not understandable, you won't build repeat business.

Quality #6: Is the Idea Timely?

A successful publication is tuned to the times. If it's too far ahead of or behind its time, it won't do well in the long run.

I failed to understand this quality in the 1970s when I was first writing about investing internationally. I'd lived abroad for nearly a decade, so this idea seemed obvious. However, it ran contrary to public thought.

Twenty years later, most U.S. investors were ready for this idea. Today, it is so common that local stockbrokers give free talks on the subject, so we've had to adapt. Because I understand this quality, I'm able to change, update, and innovate my publications constantly.

Quality #7: Is the Idea Sellable?

In publishing, marketing is a very important part of success. You can have the timeliest, most usable, interesting, easy-to-apply idea in the world. But if you cannot sell it, you won't make money. Defining your market and deciding how to sell your idea correctly is an integral part of the product creation.

I learned this lesson while pioneering the idea of investing abroad. As I said, my idea was right ... but ahead of its time. Because I was out of sync with most American investors, my original selling failed.

The product wasn't salable until I discovered avenues that led me closer to the small percentage of Americans who were interested. This process of understanding the customer is called "focus," and it's crucial to publishing success. For example, I found that though I marketed across the country to all professions and religions, a large percentage of my original readers were Jewish, Southern, or chiropractors - groups that had less trust in the establishment. Once I understood that all three of these groups perceived that the establishment had been, at one time or another, biased against them, I was able to zero in and focus my sales in those areas.

There's Always A 'What's Next?' For The Information-Marketing Client

Let me tell you about a long-time client of mine. Because he is a multi-faceted information marketer, it's not easy to accurately describe his business. It'll take a few minutes.

He publishes a book and a home-study course about earning finder's fees in the real estate investment world - the finder's fee idea of my invention. These information products are sold via direct-mail letters, magalogs, booklets, and postcards, as well as websites and tele-seminars and through affiliates.

To get that far, he required copywriting for a collection of sales letters, magalogs, booklets, postcards, and websites, then, as soon as that was working, a series of 'back-end' letters to stop refunds and help retention; to get the buyers to attend follow-up training conference calls and tele-seminars where other courses are sold; and a letter to recruit affiliates to let him promote his products to their lists.

Next, all these course buyers needed to be sold into coaching programs - requiring another wave of sales letters, booklets, audio CD scripts, websites, email campaigns. Now that all that's working, campaigns are needed for three different boot camps and an annual conference.

Next, we're in discussion to have me (a) re-create all that for a different personality with a different kind of opportunity likely to appeal to these same customers and to the much larger number of unconverted leads, and (b) re-create the original system to be aimed at a higher level, more affluent, more sophisticated target audience.

Each successful step in the evolutionary growth and expansion of his business provides the next copywriting project I'm needed for. It should be noted he is also using other freelance copywriters and content writers for less critical and difficult project work.

This guy runs his business with his wife, two employees, works part-time, generates over $5-million a year with high net profits, and pays me well for my contributions - and better yet, is zero hassle. We speak once a month during a pre-scheduled phone call, otherwise communicate by fax. As soon as I finish one thing, we contract for the next.

He is not at all unusual.

As a matter of fact, there are thousands just like him, in hundreds of different product and business categories but all marketing "how-to" information, published offline and online, delivered in training programs, in coaching programs, by one-to-one coaches, and on and on.

Many have ascension processes for their customers, so that, with coaching as an example, the same information marketer may have programs priced at $3,000, $15,000, and $30,000 a year. They have insatiable need for new and better "front-end" marketing to bring in new buyers plus even more insatiable need for "back-end" marketing to ascend their buyers, bring buyers to conferences, and otherwise monetize buyers. They also have need for content, for everything delivered to buyers that gets created "fresh" week to week, month to month.

This is but one very good kind of information-marketer client, who I'll call "Steady Eddie."

Another is the client who only periodically, even sporadically comes out of the woodwork to create and run a big but short-term promotion, for a product or event. I have clients like this I do a project for once a year and never hear from them until the next year.

There are other types of clients, too. The information-marketing industry is huge and diverse and blossoming thanks to proliferation of new media yet very much reliant on old media as well, and most importantly, in constant need for more copywriters and writers willing to learn how they operate, why their customers buy, what they sell, and then serve their needs.

Any such client's successful campaign for something automatically births an endless series of Next's, creating an endless series of assignments for the capable copywriter.

This is very important to understand. Like most businesses, a typical information-marketing business has, as its floor, one or several on-going, chug-chug-chug means of getting customers and making sales that get little or no tinkering for months or even years on end.

The client I spoke about at the start of this article is heavily reliant on a single direct-mail campaign I wrote 26 months ago, that has not needed change since.

But, good news about these information-marketing businesses: they are a bit like movie studios, in that they are very much about their next "release" and the marketing to make it a hit, and their next "release" and the marketing to make it a hit.

To their own lists of customers and unconverted leads, in their own media like websites and newsletters, they are rolling out one entirely new, built-from-scratch promotion after another after another all year long; as one is happening, the next is being readied, and the next to follow it is being conceptualized. A few months ago, when we saw the marketing of The Green Lantern movie, with fast food company, toy, comic book and magazine, video game, and online promotion. What we don't see is all the work in progress for the marketing for the new Superman, the Flash, Wonder Woman, and Justice League of America films to follow, each in varying degrees of planning and development, for 2012, 2013, and 2014.

These information marketers work in much the same way, so there is also more than one to many new products, events, coaching programs, and services being readied for launch, and advertising, marketing, and promotion campaigns as well as content being written, on cycles of months to six months to even further out.

Few other industries or types of clients function like this. That's why learning to write for information marketers can be so beneficial to the freelancer. Here, not only is there an abundance of available clients and opportunities and assignments, there is a way to eliminate the roller-coaster effect of getting an assignment and making money, but then being unemployed and having no income when you finish that assignment, then hunting for another gig. Here, there is a way to lock in steady work and income through a series of Next's.

A Money-Making Website is simply an information website on a topic you're interested in, designed to attract web visitors who are searching the Internet for information on the same topic. Once they arrive at your site, they are then turned into a passive revenue stream, which means you make money whether you're working or lying on the beach.

Unlike other Internet opportunities, you don't have to be a technology expert or marketing wiz to make this work. With the software available today, all you have to do is write. And you don't have to be a professional writer, be formally trained, or have "natural" talent. You'll be writing simple articles and website content - it's quite easy once you know the proven formulas to follow.

If you can use a computer, email, and surf the web - you can do this.

What you'll soon find, though, is that you'll quickly know more about your topic than 99.9% of the people on the planet. And not only that, you'll rapidly be viewed by people as being an expert on your topic.
You'll expand your online business skills substantially - If you've been kicking yourself about learning more about the Internet and how to build a website, this is a perfect opportunity to expand your knowledgebase. You'll learn how to do keyword research, link strategies, write content that ranks high with the search engines, write content that "pre-sells," and on and on. It's easier than you may think! You'll be helping people out - Your website will provide people with the solutions and information they are searching for. And you'll be appreciated for it. The money you can make!

First off, let's look at how you generate revenue from your site. There are many ways. Here are the top four:

Google AdSense -This is one of the most popular ways to make money from a content-rich website. Google Ads are "contextual." Contextual means the ad that Google displays on your page is determined by the content of your page. Which is great because it encourages people to click on an ad on your website. And once they do, you make money!
Other advertisements - Google AdSense, of course, is not the only game in town. There are dozens of other companies, such as Chitika and Kontera.com, who will pay you when people click on the ads you display on your site.
Affiliate products - The beauty of a Money-Making Website is that you don't have to create any products. You can sell other people's products on your site. There's no inventory to count, product to ship, or customer support required. You just sit back and collect the commissions. For instance, if your website is about water purification, you'd want to become an affiliate of a company that sells water purifiers.

Selling your own products - Of course, if you want to sell your own stuff and keep 100% of the profits, that's great, too! A popular and profitable way to make money is by writing and selling ebooks on your website's topic. Birgit Bradtke, who runs a site for people looking for information about Kimberley, Australia, sells her "Destination Kimberley" guide for $27 on her website. It's a big money-maker for her.

How much money can you make?

We've talked about the "how." Now let's talk about "how much."

Allow me to paint a scenario for you ...

Imagine how nice it would be to have an extra million dollars in the bank.

Let's say it pays you 5% interest each year, which translates into an extra $50,000 a year. That's over $4,000 coming in like clockwork every month without you lifting a finger.

Writing a Money-Making Website is a way to make that scenario come true for yourself - only without you having to have the million dollars! And you only have to put in about an hour's worth of writing each day - if you want. You can take a day, week, or month off - the money will still come in.

(Richard says he's only begun to scratch the surface when it comes to monetizing his site.) Aside from the money, good things have happened to Richard as a result of his site. He picked up a big U.S. distributor for one of the products he designed.

One page on Tomaz Mencinger's vacuum site brings him affiliate income on sales of 3-5 vacuums a day. All told, it translates to about $400 a day (or over $12,000 per month). Tomaz says, "The freedom is unbelievable. I was working for tennis clubs and academies for maybe 10 years. Sometimes I had to go to work and work with people I didn't like to work with. Now I choose who I want to work with, when I want to work, and how much I want to work."

And, of course, there's web expert Nick Usborne who, depending upon the time of year, brings in anywhere from $4,000 to $8,000 a month from his coffee website. His website has grown to the point where he only spends a couple of hours a week maintaining it.

You've got your idea for a business...

And it has a big enough market and high enough profit potential to make for a great Carefree Business.

Looks like you're ready to pull the trigger and move on to the next step...

Which means it's time to put up your website.

(If you still need some help with an idea, check out my step-by-step instructions for choosing a profitable business that I wrote earlier this year: "Get Ready.")

Think of your website as an online storefront. It's the first interaction potential customers will often have with you and will be the main tool you'll use to attract customers and sell your products.

It's got a big job to do! And in future issues, we'll tackle how to make sure it does the job right.

But first, you simply have to get it online. Because only then will your business be real.

Fortunately, setting up a small business website is actually quite simple. You don't need to have any technical expertise or have any experience putting up a website.

These days, there are many resources, software, and programs that make it possible to put a website online in just a few minutes with a few clicks. If you can surf the web and use email, you can do this.

Today, I'm going to walk you through an easy-to-follow three-step process to getting your first website live.

Step 1: Get your website address (aka domain name)

Think of your domain name as your calling card. It needs to be direct and clear so that people surfing the web have an idea of what your website is about before even reading any copy. And it should be easy to remember so that they can quickly come back to it in the future and share it with their friends and colleagues.

For example, if your business is centered around yoga for pregnant women, it might be something like yogamoms.com or even pregnantwomenyoga.com. The key here is not to have a domain name that's mysterious or "clever." It should be descriptive of what the website is all about.

Here's another reason you'll want a domain name that's descriptive: it will also help the search engines understand your website too. And being "search engine friendly" is key to your website's success. That way, when people search Google or Yahoo for information in your niche, your website will appear in the results ... which means free traffic for you!

Here are a couple of other tips when brainstorming your domain name ...

You must be able to get the ".com" version.
Try to keep it to three words or less.
Don't use hyphens.

Once you're done brainstorming, go back and list your possible names in order, with your favorite being first.

Now you're actually going to buy your web address. There are many services you can use, but I recommend GoDaddy, as they have great customer service and technical support.

Go to GoDaddy.com. Once there, start entering your website addresses. Your first choice may already be taken. But hopefully, something on your list will be available. If not, GoDaddy will often give you ideas for other names that are available, and hopefully one of them will spark a new idea.

Buying a domain for one year will cost as low as $2. But the average is around $10. And once you're done buying your domain name, you'll be able to move on to the next step...

Step 2: Hosting

If you think of the URL for your website as the address, hosting is like the house, where all of the website's content will live.

You can get hosting from many sources. But if you've bought your domain name from GoDaddy, it may be easiest to get your hosting from them as well.

Once you've purchased your domain, just click on the hosting tab on godaddy.com. Hosting accounts start at just $3 a month. GoDaddy's online system will help you "link up" your domain with your hosting account.

And it will also help you with the next step...

Step 3: Publishing Your Website

You have a domain and hosting. Now you need software that will allow you to easily publish articles, sales letters, photos, and other content to your website.

WordPress is a very easy to use platform and the one I recommend to you. No programming knowledge is needed. Posting content with WordPress is much like filling in a form on a website or sending an email.

You can download WordPress through GoDaddy as well. An option to download this software will pop up once you've secured your domain and hosting account.

WordPress is free. And there are thousands of free templates that you can download to customize the look and feel of your site, including the header (the image that runs across the top), the colors, the fonts, and more.

Scot is not alone. This is an issue shared by many readers: having many interests and feeling "pulled" towards starting a business in several different niches.

Here's what Scot, and you, too, can do if you're having trouble determining which niche to go into.

Narrow down your interests to two or three different niches you might base your business on. Scot is into literature, current events, and fly fishing.
Go through the steps to figure out whether each has a sufficiently large target market to make for a viable business. All the details and step-by-step instructions are here in my essay "Get Ready." But basically, you are looking for lots of web traffic and other businesses in that niche. If there are people selling products in that area, that means it is a saleable idea.

In Scot's case, current events is a "hot" topic all the time - but it's hard to sell products in this niche with so many free providers of news out there.

However, fly fishing and literature do pass the test.
For whatever business ideas that make it through that test, your next step is to make sure that niche is specific enough. For example, although it is a hot niche and a great market to go into, a topic like alternative health is too broad.
You have to find your own slice of that market, like natural supplements for diabetics, raw food diets for weight loss... you get the idea. Get specific steps to help you do this in my essay here. You have to think about your own experience, what specifically about that topic do you like or have expertise in.
For Scot's fly fishing, he can't just write a book about general fly fishing. He must get more specific. Does he have a special technique that lands him more fish? Does he live near a well-known fly fishing area? What about fly fishing does he do differently than others?

Scot could write a fly fishing travel guide about his favorite fly fishing spots. Or, teach others his unique technique. Fly fisherman would be willing to pay for that.
Finally, think about each specific niche you've put together. (And this is the tough part if you're still feeling torn and are not sure which business to start.)

You have to choose one to start working on and set the others aside for the time being. It's a tough decision. But, I suggest picking the one you know the most about, the topic you can write most easily about, the one thing that friends and family come to you for information. And remember, you're not "locked in" to this business idea forever.

Then, you just get started.

I recommend to Scot and you that you start writing about your niche. Writing out your ideas - just getting them on the page - is a great way to develop your business. Write articles about specific issues in your niche. Write out what products you might offer. Things like that. You'll come to realize if you're truly interested in running your business in this niche.

Most importantly, by nailing down your niche and planning it out, you've taken action. You are no longer thinking about being a Carefree Entrepreneur. You are one. And, you're actively working on your business.

If you decide that you prefer to work in another niche, it's no problem. You haven't spent any money.

But, you'll have gained a lot of experience and knowledge. Pick your niche today and get started writing.

After that, we'll cover how to fill it with content that will drive up your rankings in the search engines and keep your readers engaged and turn them into customers. A lot of the writing you do after you pick your niche will find a home on your website.

You're starting an online business. And that means the best place to do your market research is - you guessed it - online. Here are the top three resources for finding hot products:

Start with Google, specifically Google Product Search. (You can find it under the Shopping tab on the Google homepage, or at google.com/prdhp.) Scroll down and you'll find a listing of current hot products - those that have been searched for and purchased by online customers. Google gets sales information weekly from hundreds of online businesses, so if a new trend pops up, you'll see it here first.
eBay Pulse (pulse.ebay.com) is another great resource. It tracks the top 10 searches - what customers are actively looking for - on its site. ebay started out offering mostly used goods and collectibles. But these days, eBay sellers offer a lot of new products. So it's very popular with your target market of online shoppers.
Lastly, check out the largest online retailer, Amazon. Its bestsellers page (amazon.com/gp/bestsellers) is a great place to identify products you should consider selling yourself. Thousands of people shop on Amazon every hour - it's the go-to online shopping site. If it's trending on Amazon, you have a money-maker on your hands.

So what's hot right now?

I just checked out the three sites above and some of the big sellers of the moment are electronic gadgets (including cell phones, laptops, tablet computers, and mp3 players), women's shoes, video games, and holiday decor.

Check out these research tools yourself today. Make a list of the top 10 products selling on each site: Google Product Search, eBay, and Amazon. It's on these lists that you'll find the in-demand products that you should be selling online with your import-export business. If you find a product on two or three of the lists, the money-making potential is even greater.

The Power of One - One Big Idea

One of the biggest lessons I have ever learned about writing came very late - in fact, more than twenty years after I wrote my first piece of copy.

It happened about a year after I began writing Early To Rise (ETR). I was looking over issues I'd written that year and noting which ones readers rated the highest. Without exception, those achieving the highest scores presented a single idea.

It struck me that readers didn't want to hear everything I had to say about a topic every time I wrote. They were looking for a single, useful suggestion or idea that could make them more successful.

That was one of those "aha!" experiences for me.

As a reader, I had always most enjoyed stories and essays that tackled one subject effectively and deeply. As a writer, I sensed my readers felt this way too. But it wasn't until I looked at the ETR results that I recognized the power of a narrow focus in writing.

I checked to see if this same phenomenon applied to advertising copy. I pulled out my box of "best promotions of all time." While not all of them were on a single topic, most of the very best hit just one idea strongly.

It seemed I was on to something. I presented this idea as one "powerful secret to publishing success" when Agora had our first company-wide meeting for publishers in France.

Bill Bonner reminded me he'd learned about the Power of One from the great advertising guru David Ogilvy. Ogilvy's concept was that every great promotion has, at its core, a single, powerful idea that he called "the Big Idea."

At about that same time, John Forde was rereading the classic 1941 book, "How to Write a Good Advertisement" by Victor Schwab - the man Advertising Age called the "greatest mail-order copywriter of all time."

In that book, Schwab listed his choice for the "Top 100 Headlines." John found that of those 100 top headlines, 90 were driven by single, Big Ideas.

Note how instantly clear and engaging these "Big Ideas" are...

"Is the Life of a Child Worth $1 to You?"
"To Men Who Want to Quit Work Someday"
"Are You Ever Tongue-Tied at a Party?"

At ETR, we made this concept a "rule" for writing. The mandate was clear. Write about one thing at a time. One good idea, clearly and convincingly presented, was better than a dozen so-so ideas strung together.

When we obeyed that rule, our essays were stronger. When we ignored it, they were not as powerful as they could have been.

One core emotion: "It is simple! I bet I can do it!"
One captivating story: Told brilliantly in 11 words: "My very first e-book has generated $20,727 in sales (so far)."
One single, desirable benefit: "Now, I want to show you how to make huge profits creating and selling simple e-books."
One inevitable response: The only way to get this book for $19 is to "click here now."

To create blockbuster promotions time after time, you must understand the difference between good copy and great copy. The Power of One is the driving force behind great copy.

Veteran advertising consultant James Loftus, who's worked with Anheuser-Busch, Holiday Inn, McDonald's, and many other clients, agrees:

"Also keep in mind that the more points you try to cover, the less effective each point, and therefore your ad, will be. An effective ad will actually have only one central focus, even if you discuss it from two or three perspectives. If your points are too diverse, they compete with each other, and end up pulling the reader's attention in separate directions."

When challenged with an advertising assignment, most writers conjure lists of features and benefits, then mention as many as possible. Their thinking goes, "I wonder which of these benefits will really push the buttons I want? I'll throw them all in. That way, if one doesn't work, another one will."

This is B-level copywriting. It's not the way to create breakthrough advertising.

As Carefree Entrepreneurs, we take the "easy way" whenever possible.

This philosophy guides how we start our businesses. What niche we go into. And, as I'll show you today, what products we sell.

The great news is that you can sidestep the dilemma facing many new business owners: how do I create a profitable new product?

Take my friend John, whom I mentioned a few months ago. In his Carefree Business, he never creates products. He simply chooses among thousands of already created, proven-to-sell products to offer on his websites. This speeds up the time it takes for products to come in. And he never has to waste time trying to perfect a product he's created.

John doesn't stock these in a warehouse or ship them out... process orders or handle returns... or even talk to customers.

The only thing he does is some simple advertising. For that, he collects checks every month - from wherever in the world he happens to be at the moment.

It's thanks to affiliate marketing.

Basically, John markets other businesses' products (he specializes in nutritional supplements) and takes a commission (from 20 to 80 percent or more, depending on the company) on every sale. All he has to do is include a unique link (trackable to him) to the shopping cart of the company in an ad, blog post, article, or sales letter on his website.

It's all automated. And John has nothing to do with the order after visitors to his site click over to the shopping cart. As I mentioned, affiliates don't have to process orders, ship out products, or handle any customer service.

It's a very low-maintenance business thanks to that level of automation.

The Easiest Way to Get Started as an Affiliate

As an affiliate, you can sell products from big names like Amazon or Walmart, as well as smaller companies who market everything from weight loss programs to legal services.

But today, we'll focus on an affiliate network called ClickBank. It's ideally suited to Carefree Entrepreneurs - and first time online business builders - because:

It deals solely in instantly downloadable digital information products. With instant delivery, customers are more willing to buy.

The products on ClickBank are cheap - nothing above a few hundred bucks. Again, that means customers are itching to pull out that credit card. Expensive products sell less. You'll find products on just about any subject you can think of: investing, dog training, Disney World, weddings, computer help, languages, building chicken coops... And they're in many formats that appeal to customers: ebooks, software, instruction books, travel guides, and more.

One bestselling product in the health and fitness area, The Turbulence Training Kettlebell Revolution, is a video series dedicated to exercising with the kettlebell, a heavy round weight with a ring attached. With a 75 percent commission and a sales price of $57 for the basic package... that's $42.75 per sale you get to keep. Just five sales a day would bring in just under $1,500 a week.

And all you've done is set up a simple website selling this product.

What's really cool is that many times the business you affiliate with has proven sales copy already written for you. You can use it on your own site in ads, blog posts, articles, and even full sales letters. The companies encourage you to "copy" all their advertising. They want you to market their products and will help you do so.

You're bound to find a product related to your business's niche on ClickBank. The list is easily searchable on the website. And you get detailed sales stats so you know which products are the most popular. These are proven sellers that have made affiliates thousands of dollars.

And when you want to start promoting a ClickBank product, it's easy. You don't have to contact each product creator and set up an agreement. You just register once with ClickBank.

Then you simply browse all the affiliate offers available related to your niche, pick one, and as a member, you'll get links to the company's sales letter and order page, trackable to your account. ClickBank handles the commission payments so you don't have to follow up with anybody.

There really is no easier way to start selling online.

Of course, to generate sales, you need a website and customers visiting that website, right?

The tips I've been passing on over the past several months - and the ones to come - will help you do that.

Copycatting Is a Good Thing

"So far, my website is pretty much identical to your site," PG told me.

PG is one of my coaching students. I had just asked him to tell me about the progress he was making with his online business.

He had a sign-up box on the top right-hand corner of every page of his website. It offered a free newsletter in exchange for a site visitor's first name and email address. He had a lot of quality content. And the site navigation was clean and easy to follow. He even had a search box and "refer a friend" option.

Was I upset by the striking similarity between his website and mine? Absolutely not. I was happy to see that he had copied so much. In fact, as his coach, that's what I told him to do.

You see, it wasn't my "intellectual property" that he was using. It was the structure of the website and the business model.

When you're starting an online business, one of the smartest things you can do is follow a proven model instead of trying to figure it all out on your own. And if you have a coach or mentor to help you, so much the better. It will really speed up your learning curve.

Now, you may be thinking that "following" another business and having someone "hold your hand" doesn't sound fun, exciting, or original. But the fact is, most fledgling entrepreneurs who try to reinvent the wheel end up frustrated and disappointed. (There is nothing fun or exciting about spending a lot of time and money on a business and not turning a profit.)

I should know. I used to be one of those guys. But after a couple of years of trial and error, I discovered a tried-and-tested way of doing business online: the Agora Model. It's named after Agora Publishing, the information marketing company. I learned about the Agora Model and met the mentors who helped me apply it.

In a nutshell, the Agora Model uses direct-response advertising to drive traffic to your website. On the website, you offer valuable information - say, a free newsletter or special report. In return, you ask your visitors for their email address.

Once you have a visitor's email address, you follow up by sending them additional free information, as well as offers for your products and services.

This simple model is underutilized by online entrepreneurs. But make no mistake about how powerful it is. It is the model that Agora used to grow into a $600 million a year company. And dozens of other in-the-know solo entrepreneurs used to create their own successful businesses - including me.

I used the Agora Model to build my own six-figure online business. It worked for me. And it can work for you, too.

Sure, I look at other online businesses and adapt some of what they are doing successfully to my ventures. It could be a copy approach, a type of offer, or a hot new product. And I'm always on the lookout for new strategies and techniques.

But the Agora Model is the core of my business.

It's tempting to be a renegade and try to do it "your way." But the days of the Wild, Wild Web are over. And the Agora Model has been proven to work time and time again.

Once I learned and applied the Agora Model, it really accelerated my progress. As I said, the quickest way to build an online business is to have a mentor or coach guide you through the process.

As a Carefree Entrepreneur, you've already been getting great advice from top online entrepreneurs who have "been there, done that."

When you're a Carefree Entrepreneur, failure is... a good thing.

It seems counterintuitive. But it is actually a key to your success.

You learn from your mistakes. You discover what works and what doesn't when it comes to your marketing approach... products you try to sell... even the niche in which you've put your online business. Based on what you learn, you tweak and make changes.

The foundation of your Carefree Business will be much stronger.

Think of it as the market (all those potential customers out there) telling you what they want. All you have to do is listen.

The great news is that because you're starting an Internet business, this market research is very cheap and it comes fast. Because you're selling digital products, you won't have a warehouse of products that don't sell. And you won't be on the hook for an expensive lease with your online storefront.

In other words, you won't have lost a large investment. And you'll have gained invaluable knowledge.

So don't fear failure. Embrace it.

The Road to Success Is Paved with Accelerated Failures

Failure. It's a fear many of us in this industry know all too well.

And it's a fear that can get in your way from time to time, especially when you're just starting out.

Failure is actually one of my biggest fears in life.

Yet ironically, when it comes to marketing, it doesn't faze me one bit.

Let me explain...

Early on in my career, I was told that if I wasn't failing, I wasn't marketing enough. The key was to uncover why I failed, and then turn it into an opportunity to learn and become a better marketer.

Well, yesterday I was rereading AWAI's Accelerated Program for Six-Figure Copywriting for a presentation I was giving that night, and I came across a short section called The Theory of Accelerated Failures.

I thought of you right away, so I decided I would share it with you today...

"The road to success is paved with accelerated failures." – Michael Masterson

According to Michael's theory, the way to become truly successful is twofold:

You must be willing to make mistakes.
You need to make most of your mistakes in the beginning of your career, and then immediately correct them.

It goes like this...

Let's say you've just written your first autoresponder series. You've gone through Jay White's Autoresponder Apprentice program, followed his instructions, put a lot of good work into writing the series, and you're pleased with what you've done.

You send it off to the client, feeling proud and full of confidence.

But when you ask the client for the results (and you'd better be doing this!), you find out that it only brought back mediocre results.

What went wrong?!

After the initial disappointment subsides, you sit down and review the entire series more thoroughly. And right then, you see the mistake...

Your copy wasn't really directed towards the reader! You talked way too much about your own experience and never really showed your reader how your experience would help them.

So, what do you do next?

Apply the theory of accelerated failures...

First, you need to realize that you, like everyone else in the world, make mistakes.

Remember, too, that since this was your first autoresponder series, it would be unrealistic to expect gangbuster results.

So, after you've accepted the fact that you made a mistake, you must then address the second half of the theory...

You must correct the mistake immediately.

In this example, you realized you focused far too much on yourself and not enough on the reader. So you go and learn how to better establish intimacy with your reader by practicing several different techniques (tip: if you have the Six-Figure Program, you have all the techniques you need!).

You then practice these techniques again... and again... until you have them down cold.

And then finally, you resolve to remember to never make that mistake again.

See how that works?

You make a mistake. Then you immediately correct it the first time around so it doesn't happen a second time.

When you get to your second assignment, you follow the same process. You correct the mistakes, learn from them, and make sure they don't happen your third time around. And so on.

What this means is that in each effort you make, you'll be making "smarter" and "smarter" mistakes. That's the power that comes from accelerated failures!

When you start looking at failures this way, you start to see them as gifts, and instead of trying to ignore them, will actually seek them out. Failures force you to look in new directions, approach different angles, and continuously learn.

And that's what will make you a stronger and more successful web writer.

Of course, it's actually true outside of the web-writing world, too...

Most extremely successful people reached that status because they weren't afraid to make mistakes... and because they quickly learned from them.

Think about it...

Babe Ruth would never have gotten a home run if he wasn't willing to get struck out first...
Henry Ford would never have created the Model T if he gave up after his first try...
And Walt Disney would never have created Mickey Mouse if he wasn't willing to give animation one more shot after losing everything in a bad business deal...

Perhaps the most noteworthy example is Thomas Edison...

According to historical accounts, Edison failed 10,000 times in his storage battery experiments. When asked about these failures, Edison replied,

"Why, I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."

Edison went on to win 141 patents for storage batteries as well as 389 for electric light and power, 195 for the phonograph, 150 for the telegraph, and 34 for the telephone.

1,093 patents in all!

How's that for learning from your mistakes?

So, when you sit down to write your next (or first) email, article, home page, etc., think about Thomas Edison.

Remember that true success can come only through failures.

And from this day forward, resolve to never be afraid of making a mistake.

Jack Panzarella was an entrepreneur who embraced this philosophy. And although he started a more traditional brick-and-mortar business, I'd like to share his story because it's a great example of Ready, Fire, Aim in action.

A car enthusiast, Jack was inspired in the early '90s to create neon lights that attached to the underside of cars. He managed to put together a few hundred bucks to build a prototype, which he put on his car. He didn't invest any money in inventory or setting up shop somewhere - he was a high school dropout with no money. He wanted to see if people would buy his creation first.

Working from home, he started calling custom car shops. And he went to car shows in his area. Based on comments he got, he tweaked the lights and the price until he found the sweet spot.

But even then, he didn't call up a manufacturer to start pumping out neon car kits. He would build the kits one at a time when he got a deposit from a customer.

Only when the number of orders kept growing, and he couldn't keep up on his own, did he order inventory. Today, Jack's company (Jack himself retired in 2006) is the industry leader and makes millions per year.

And it all started with an idea and his focus on trying to sell it before he did anything else.

Like most of us, Jack didn't have the luxury of a huge start-up budget. He wasn't willing to risk everything on an untested idea. But he had the desire to work for himself.

That's why Ready, Fire, Aim is so powerful for first-time entrepreneurs. It's a nearly risk-free way to test the waters with your business ideas.

So let's break it down into its three parts...

First, you get Ready.

What will you sell?

At this point, you don't need business cards or a logo. Or to be an expert web designer or know Internet marketing strategy inside and out. Don't consult an attorney about registering with the state. Or an accountant about your tax situation.

Truth is, you don't need any of those things to start a business. (Most you never will, actually.) They'll just bog you down.

A Carefree Business is all about keeping things simple. So all you need is an idea for a product, something you have a hunch will sell. Because you're selling information online, the whole process of product creation and even marketing is a snap thanks to all the easy-to-use tools out there.

(I'll give you some action steps to get you Ready in a moment.)

That brings us to Fire.

At the Fire stage, you've turned your idea into a simple product that you didn't spend much time or money to create. The goal is to see if it will sell before you invest any more time or money.

So you direct most of your effort into trying to sell it. You try advertising in different media, testing ad copy (check out this article for an outline of copywriting) and prices, change the look and feel of the product... until you find something that works. Be creative with your testing. And don't worry if you aren't sure how to do this yet. It's my favorite part of the whole process, so I'll be giving you plenty of tips on how to do it quickly, inexpensively, and effectively.

And if it doesn't work, you try another idea. Because your investment was very small - no harm. Failure in this case is a good thing. Now you know what doesn't work and can narrow down to what does. The key is to accelerate that failure so you can move quickly to success.

When you know how to sell that initial product, you're ready to Aim.

After reviewing the results of the Fire step, you perfect the product and the advertising.

You keep selling your first product, gradually introducing other products in the same area. Before you know it, your Carefree Business will be off and running, and growing quickly.

So now... back to...

The First Step to Getting Your Carefree Business Ready

Getting Ready is the foundation of your Carefree Business.

First, you need an idea.

You may already have a "dream" business you've built in your mind.

But if you don't, that's okay. Spend some time today thinking about your passions and hobbies, things you're interested in. Pick one.

When considering the idea for your business, you should have a good feeling that it could sell.

In the next essay in this series, I'll show you how to get that business idea Ready enough to test in the marketplace quickly and inexpensively.

Later on, we'll tackle how to Fire and Aim your Carefree Business, which will turn that idea into a full-fledged business.

Dear Make Money At Home,

A new health publishing company I worked with a few years ago was slowly failing.

They had created a low-priced monthly newsletter full of alternative health tips, a very hot trend, to attract new customers to their business. And then they had developed some diet and exercise programs, as well as nutritional supplements to sell to those customers.

But they couldn't attract enough subscribers to the newsletter, even though it really was just as good if not better than other newsletters in the space. And that meant sales of their other products weren't coming in.

By the end of the year they were more than $100,000 in the hole.

Luckily, it finally clicked what they were doing wrong. Having a high-quality publication simply wasn't enough on its own.

They had to have great copy to sell it - to stand out from their competitors.

You've seen copy before. It's the words and phrases on advertising, whether it's an email, snail mail sales letter, autoresponder, website banner ad, Google AdWords ad, etc.

And when it comes to selling anything, the copy used is called direct-response copy - or copy that asks the reader to take an action like buying your product. It does not "create awareness" about a product - which is the aim of many of the clever ads you might see for say cars, soft drinks, or perfumes.

Instead, a direct-response ad call to action could ask the reader to: Donate to charity by sending a check in the enclosed envelope. Sign up for a free online newsletter by entering an email address. Open a bank account or credit card by calling the 800 number. That sort of thing.

Once my health publishing friends tried to sell their newsletter again with great copy... they sold thousands of subscriptions at $49 a pop. Joint venture partners came calling with offers to mail the promotion to their list. (Once you have copy that is working, a lot of new friends come out of the woodwork.) And they were selling thousands of dollars worth of their other products too.

Within a year of finding copy that worked - they were profitable.

You see, even though this was a pretty well-financed company with a lot of expertise and resources at its disposal... the lack of good copy brought it to its knees. All the money in the world couldn't save it.

Fortunately, you have the opportunity to start your Carefree Business on the right foot by incorporating effective promotions from day one - and you can do it on a very low budget. You'll be profitable faster, spend less time and money on marketing efforts that don't work, and be light years ahead of other entrepreneurs who don't realize how important copy is.

When It Comes to Marketing, Copy Is King

You can have the best products in your niche. The flashiest website. The most thought-out marketing plan. A list of hundreds of thousands of prospects.

But without copy tying it all together, your online business will fail.

Once you have the copy down, though, everything comes together. Everything you do in your Carefree Business becomes easier. You'll work less. And most importantly, sales will grow and more money will come in the door.

And that's because copy is what converts prospects into customers.

As an online entrepreneur you don't see your prospects. So you don't have the chance to tell them face-to-face about how great your product or service is.

You have to rely on the words and phrases on your website, in your emails, and the like. So those words better be darn persuasive.

Writing persuasively isn't hard to do once you know what you're trying to persuade the reader to do or feel...

Check out this famous example from the sales letter for expat newsletter International Living:

You look out your window, past your gardener, who is busily pruning the lemon, cherry, and fig trees... amidst the splendor of gardenias, hibiscus, and hollyhocks.

The sky is clear blue. The sea is a deeper blue, sparkling with sunlight.

A gentle breeze comes drifting in from the ocean, clean and refreshing, as your maid brings you breakfast in bed.

Can you see how the words form images in your mind? The writer wants you to picture yourself in a tropical paradise. He's persuading you to want that paradise for yourself. That way when he asks you to sign up for the newsletter that will help you obtain that paradise, you'll be ready to sign your name on the dotted line.

This is a great example of good copy. The full letter was actually sent out by International Living for decades, sold thousands of subscriptions of their newsletter, and was responsible for the success of the business.

And that's just one example. There are thousands of promotions out there that have achieved similar results.

So, the question for you now is: how do you go about getting great copy for your Carefree Business?

The good news is you can learn to recognize the good stuff fairly quickly... once you learn what "good copy" is. And once you know, you'll never look at copy the same way ever again - whether it's yours or someone else's.

At that point, once you know the hidden structure behind good advertising, you'll be primed to write your own effective copy. And you'll be light years ahead of competitors who don't recognize the value of copy. Believe me, they exist.

Here's how to get started with your copy education:

Build what we in the biz call a "swipe file." This is just a collection of good ad writing you see, especially copy that caused you to buy something. Model your own copy on these examples.

Check out articles about copywriting on AWAI's website and sign up for the newsletters. You can browse the archive, which includes thousands of articles on the topic, simply by clicking on the various copywriting categories.

Start writing your own copy. You can't learn for real unless you practice. Test your new copy in your business to see what your audience responds to. Whether you end up using your own copy or hiring someone else, writing copy is the only way you'll learn to distinguish the good from the bad.

I was at the beach last weekend. It was a beautiful South Florida day. So it was crowded, of course.

Luckily, my son made a friend as soon as we set up. A little boy his age - 4 ½. Soon the kids were building and demolishing sand castles. And my wife and I started talking to the parents. They were vacationing here from New Jersey, renting a condo on the beach.

We talked about the kids at first. Both are picky eaters it turns out.

I noticed the dad was glancing down at his iPhone about every five minutes. 'Can't disconnect, even on a beautiful day at the beach. That's too bad,' I thought to myself.

I couldn't resist. So I asked him, "Working on the weekend?"

"Nah," he said, "I just launched a new product for my web business this morning. And I just had to make sure the order system was working. But I'm done for the day now. I'll check the sales numbers this evening."

That broke the ice. I told him I was in the same industry. In fact, that I help people set up their own online businesses.

Turns out he's been online for about two years. He was "full-time" with it. Although "full-time" meant two hours a day. And about 20 minutes of email and "checking in on things" while he was away. And they were away most of the summer - until school started back up.

"I could never do that when I was in my corporate job," he laughed.

I asked him how he'd gotten started. And what he told me was almost word for word the plan Michael Masterson lays out for you in his essay today.

Your Eight-Step Guide to Becoming a Carefree Entrepreneur

In my essay last Saturday, I promised to give you, free of charge, the business start-up strategy I created for my friend SA. It contains the steps necessary to make the transition from overworked and underpaid to an early retirement.

This plan is exclusively for readers of this new free weekly service, Carefree Entrepreneur (more details below). And with it, you can do what SA did … which is start his own online business following my advice. My goal for you … just like my goal for SA … is to show you how you can replace or add to your income working just a few stress-free hours a day.

With the plan I'm recommending, you get the freedom, sense of purpose, and fun that comes from being your own boss. You can create a second income stream above and beyond what you're making now - enough to essentially retire in a year or two. And thanks to technology and current trends, it's the easiest (and cheapest) type of business to start.

So here it is…

If I went broke tomorrow and wanted to start making money by next week and leverage that money into a multimillion-dollar fortune over the next 10 years, I would do the following:

1. Get on my computer and do a search for businesses that are selling books, newsletters, and reports online, focusing on subjects I'm interested in and know about. Knowing what I know about searching the Internet, I figure this would take me less than 30 minutes.

2. Use one of several free applications to identify about a dozen of those businesses that were growing rapidly. Again, this would take no more than 30 minutes.

3. Review the websites of those businesses and select the one I liked the best. This would take three to four hours.

4. Using a list of top copywriters broken down by their fields of expertise, I'd make a deal with one of them to write (a) an information-packed report that was similar to something being sold by my favorite online business but in some key way better and (b) a promotion to sell that report. An hour's phone call.

5. While my copywriter was writing the report and the promotion, I'd get online and identify the best places to attract potential customers. Using easy-to-use, free, and widely available software, this would take only 30 minutes.

6. As soon as the promotion was ready, I'd have the copywriter create a half-dozen small ads enticing potential buyers to come to my website in order to get a free one-page report (based on the information in the full report).

7. As prospects came to my website, I'd have them sign up for a free information service that would allow me to start marketing to them directly. (This would be done automatically. It would take me no time at all.)

8. And then I would send them the promotion for the full report … and sit back and wait for the money to start coming in.

In the coming weeks and months in Carefree Entrepreneur, we'll be showing you exactly how to do each step listed above. But as you can see already, this is a simple strategy that requires very little in the way of start-up costs. My total invested time would be four or five days. And I'd have the business fully operational within 30 days. By the end of the second month, I'd be making money. After that, the business would pretty much grow itself.

The business model I just described works. It has worked for my clients. And it has worked for the many people we know of who have used it to generate their own income streams. In fact, since I began talking about this strategy 10 years ago in Early to Rise and my various books, I'd be willing to bet that hundreds of readers have used it to create millions of dollars' worth of revenue.

But, as I said, this opportunity won't be around much longer.

When we started sharing our secrets, there was no one else out there to compete with us. Now, we probably have thousands of competitors, most of whom no doubt learned how to start their businesses from us. (That's something we can't prove, of course - except to point out that we were there first.) At some point in the future, though, we won't want to keep sharing our secrets. Google Street View
Continues to Raise Privacy Concerns

Google Street View, a Google Maps feature that lets users see images of streets and the surrounding areas, continues to generate controversy. Since its launch in May 2007, the feature has prompted questions about whether it constitutes an invasion of privacy, complaints about inappropriate images, and even a lawsuit.

Aaron and Christine Boring vs. Google

The lawsuit came from a Pittsburgh couple in April 2008. The couple lives on a private road. However, Google's Street View team travelled down the road and continued taking images all the way up to the couple's home. The images were then posted to Google Maps and included close-ups of the couple's home, swimming pool, and outbuildings.

Google's response? "Complete privacy does not exist in this world except in a desert, and anyone who is not a hermit must expect and endure the ordinary incidents of the community life of which he (or she) is a part."(1)

While Google's assertion that its Street View imaging team is an "ordinary incident of community life" is far-fetched, Google does make some good points in its response. Namely, that the plaintiffs could have simply requested that Google delete the offending images from Street View via a form available on Google Maps. Instead, the couple filed suit and in doing so have made the matter public record and ensured that the images will be viewed by even more people.

Since the lawsuit, Google has removed the images in question, but the suit remains open.

The Borings' Neighbors

On Goldenbrook Lane, a nearby street, some of the Borings' neighbors also had an incident with the Street View team. In this incident, the Street View team drove up Goldenbrook Lane and into the driveway of the McKee residence. They continued to drive, snapping Street View images the whole way, up to the garages of the McKees.(2) While it appears that the McKees didn't resort to a lawsuit, Google has removed the images of the home that were taken from private property from Street View.

Street View in California

In California, the antics of the Street View drivers continued. Drivers reportedly went on over 100 private roads in Sonoma County according to an analysis done by PressDemocrat.com. In another instance, Street View drivers went past two no trespassing signs as they photographed the 1,200 foot private road leading up to Betty Webb's house in Humboldt County. In another incident reported by PressDemocrat.com, Street View drivers ignored a no trespassing sign, passed through a gate, and drove through someone's yard on a dirt road near Freestone.

Street View and U.S. Military Bases

In March 2008, the Pentagon requested that Google erase some images of military bases taken from public streets due to the potential threat those images posed to national security. "It actually shows where all the guards are. It shows how the barriers go up and down. It shows how to get in and out of buildings," said General Gene Renuart, commander of U.S. Northern Command.(3) According to Google spokesman Larry Yu, Google has honored the Pentagon's requests.(4) However, the Pentagon was still reviewing the many images of military facilities that were included in Street View.(5)

Street View Goes Global

After the complaints in the U.S., other countries warned Google that Street View would have to be modified to comply with their stricter privacy laws. To this end, Google has improved facial recognition technology so that it can find faces in images and blur them so that they are unrecognizable. This technology has also been applied to license plates. The blurring feature has since been applied to U.S. Street View imagery in addition to images in other countries where Street View is now available.

Accountability

While Google has removed some of the aforementioned locations from Street View, the burden to monitor Google's actions, be it Street View or other Google services, continues to fall on people like you and me. With regard to Street View, Google argues that "many people visitors pulling in the driveway, neighbors turning around at the end of the road, deliverymen delivering packages can all plainly see the exterior of the (Borings) home."(6) While these examples are likely accurate for the Borings and the population in general, they involve people that we know or strangers that we requested to come to our homes. Private residents didn't request that Google visit these neighborhoods nor would residents reasonably expect that someone would be driving down their streets taking photographs of everything. In fact, I suspect that if you or I were to do the same thing, someone would call the police and we'd have some difficult questions to answer down at the station.

Potential Consequences

So, what could the consequences of Street View be? Well, while the feature has been used to aid police in a kidnapping investigation (7), I think the feature could be far more useful to criminals. For example, a criminal could use Street View to case a neighborhood - checking Street View for cars that are parked in garages or driveways so they could know when someone isn't at home, scan the yards and windows for any signs indicating that homes have security systems, check the proximity of neighboring houses using Street View and Google's satellite imagery, look for signs of pets that could pose problems for a thief, see if the homes have newspapers delivered (which might help the thief determine if the residents were on vacatíon) and, assuming the criminal found a good candidate, select a few potential access points (like open windows) for breaking into the home. If the Street View car happened to pass through your neighborhood on garbage day, the camera might even capture the box of that new HDTV you got. Scary, huh?

Protecting Your Privacy

So how can you protect yourself? First, check your address using Street View. To report a concern with Street View imagery, enter the address you desire and click "Search Maps." Then, click "Street View" in the thought bubble that appears on the map. Once the "Street View" image appears, click "Report a Concern" in the bottom left corner of the Street View image and enter the details of your complaint.

Second, be mindful of how your information is used and act when you feel your privacy is being threatened. Google's Street View can be a helpful tool, but it is meant to help Google sell ads and make revenue, not protect your privacy. You can write your local, state and federal representatives and even the local paper to voice your opinion.

Oh, and if you believe as Google does that "complete privacy does not exist," then you should check out the house where Google CEO Eric Schmidt reportedly lives using satellite imagery from Google Maps. It looks like he has had some construction done in the past few years. A simple Google search of the address (366 Walsh Road, Atherton, CA) will tell you that Schmidt merged two adjacent lots in 20018 to create the new lot and then added a new fence, retaining wall, and drainage in 2004. (9) Eric, that creepiness that you're feeling is probably approaching the level of the people who had Street View vehicles in their driveways. So, while it is Google's mission to "organize the world's information and make it accessible and useful," the company should thoroughly consider how that information can adversely impact the same people it is meant to help.
